About Me

Choices are sometimes not really choices at all, rather inheritable traits that you are tricked into believing you "chose". Like saying I chose to be a writer and storyteller, for example, is a stretch of the truth because since my childhood I've been gifted with a passion and understanding for mass communication. I aced spelling bees, read 300-page books in first grade and used my father's ancient computer to create one-page newspaper editions documenting household news. (I was too young to be objective, however.) I am choosing to pursue a career in photo and print journalism because I'm passionate about it, gifted at writing and illustrating my words and because I believe that one should possess a desire to do what she enjoys each day.

My journalistic instinct draws me to cultural themes, particularly Latin culture. While a Spanish and journalism double major at the University of Iowa, I spent a year in Colima, Mexico studying the Mexican print industry. Since then, I have traveled to Argentina, Kenya and Tanzania on my own account with my pen and my Canon digital 18-55mm immersing myself in cultural knowledge and making sense of it to fellow patriots who faithfully read my emails, short stories and viewed my photos. I have an eye for capturing what I believe is both exciting and relevant and my endless thirst for information leads me to great interviews and access, two key components to a successful journalist. My family disappointed me as a five year-old by asserting that I could never know everything. I'm dedicating my career to disproving their theory.
